From time immemorial (Meaning the early 90's) we have within our power to reprogram vehicles ECUs to give us better performance, remove limiters, add HP and torque that go beyond OEM specs, etc...
But I have never understood why we cannot do something similar with Auto Transmissions? E.g. imagine fixing the above, the horrid Chrysler 200 9-speed automatic, that everyone agrees can’t pick gears for shit, into something better?
Do Transmissions not use a combination of hardware/firmware/software that could perhaps be modified to work better? Millions of Nissan CVT’s need help too. And even some GM and Hyundai transmissions also need better adjustments - sometimes one tranny works well in one model but not in another. Educate me oppo, what’s the deal with non-adjustable-transmission software? Why can’t we hack something there?

We can’t?

This is already done on some vehicles. For instance, the Livernois tune for the Ford Taurus SHO firms up shifts and removes some of the torque management functions of the transmission. People have been tuning GM electronically controlled tranmissions for ages.

You absolutely can.

But you can.

People make flashes/chips for transmissions...Diesel trucks and VW DSGs just off the top of my head.

AWE sells a software reprogram for the Audi S-Tronic transmission.

Maybe I’ve spent too much time in the VAG world. I always see ECUs being offered but I’ve never seen an offer for ‘Transmission Tuning’ of the sort. And if we can do that, why wouldn’t then one buy the Chrysler 200 and then a ‘Tranny Chip Upgrade’ the same way you buy an A4 3.0T and you already know you want a stage 3 chip.

a lot of tuners sell TCU’s for VAG vehicles.

So going back to example, why then no one recommends, buy the awful Chrysler 200 and take it to have the transmission re-flashed with this software... and voila - better car!

How big a market do you think there really is for a Chrysler 200 shift tune? The cars are there but the owners probably don’t give a shit, and even if they do they don’t want to risk burning something up from going aftermarket.
It’s also best done on a dyno or with real world testing. Mail order stuff is hit-or-miss, and you can miss big.

In the VAG world they have been offering tunes for DSG transmissions for... at least 6 years?

As someone who codes for a living I’ve often had this thought (would love to get my hands on the shiftmap data for ZF’s 8 speed). Realistically there would be an easy to solution to the 9 speeds issues too... Essentially edit out lines of code that use the dog clutches in this transmission — they’re only used for two gears. Adjust the ratios accordingly so the gear after the dog clutch shift has a higher ratio — so you don’t feel as dramatic a loss of power from going 4-> 6 instead of the standard 4->Dogclutch 5->6 and you’d have a winner. Allow 9 (which is now gear 7) to engage sooner, but make 8th (6th) gear have a higher threshold before it shifts to it... And it should solve most of these shift issues. All this being a rough ideas.... But conceptually I think I’d be on the right path.

On S4s you could have it hold gears, in stead of shifting when it wanted. It all comes down to what controlls are in place, and how much they can be varied, which is what tuning is about. You can only control what is controllable. Most transmissions dont have much to mess with on the ECU level, so you’ll mostly hear about changing the TC and stall speeds etc.

You can.

TCU tunes are available for most “dual-clutch” type of gearboxes. However most of the cars that come with those sorts of gearboxes are “performance oriented” cars to begin with.
I think its a safe bet that most drivers that would want to “tune” their cars, would stay far from a CVT in the first place.

Most ECU flashes also change the transmission mappings for better power delivery. It's just some cars are worth the R and D and many aren't because the market isn't big enough.

People who tune tend to want to go 'good->better' not 'crap->ok'.

Some cars you can

But the VAG world is where a ton of TCU tuning takes place.
Just look at APR and the number of transmission tunes they offer for Audi and Volkswagen vehicles that use DCTs.

I’ve read about this being done on the 5 speed auto in 4th Gen 3.6R Outbacks.

You can, Im surprised you havent heard of it either because you said youre in the VAG world. Im driving a GLI and it can be tuned both for its ecu in the form of performance gaining mods and you can have a DSG tune to change your transmissions habits completely.
A DSG tune is actually next on my list of things I shouldnt buy but do.

People do this all the time... For more than a decade now...

Transmission tunes are absolutely a thing in the BMW world. I think Dinan offers them for all current cars

It can too be done. Murdersofa Jake had his Lesabre’s TCU reflashed. The post he made about it was a few years ago though so you’ll never find it.

I don’t know if this exists for the Focus’ Powershift, but it should.
Then again, most owners are more concerned about the Powershift destroying itself than performance, so that’s probably why the only tuners I know of are bundled with engine tunes.

uhhh you can tune a transmission? APR for example does DSG tunes, and so revo unitronic and the rest of them.... variable gear ratios are a different thing because you need to change the size of a cog to change actual gearing

Its common in the diesel world when you buy programmers or custom tunes they add tranny tuning as well. mess with the pressures for shift points and such

People reprogram transmissions, especially in muscle car world and trucks both diesel and gas

The Murdersofa has a tuned transmission. General Motors 4L65e, tuned to have a two-gear kickdown, firmer shifts for better trans longevity, more aggressive gear holding (instead of shifting to 2nd at 4000rpm at 80% throttle it waits ‘till 5000rpm, for example), less aggressive torque converter lockup, etc.
